A Week of Seuss

On Monday we did this (dressed up for NEA's Read Across America Day):

It took Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday to complete our glyphs & -at books (in his tummy):

And then today we did this - build a __ocket in your pocket & describe it.  My favorite:

My locket is surfing in the sink.  He is going to the beach to get a sun tan.  He is swimming to impress the girls that are swimming.

Tomorrow we'll wrap up with a little bit of If I Ran the Zoo & writing opinions about our favorite Dr. Seuss book.  Mine - Horton Hatches the Egg.

I'm out of Dr. Seuss shirts (I have 4) so I'm going shopping for a 5th one!

Feet, Elephants, & an Assembly - It's Seuss-tastic!

This year we celebrated all things Seuss with quite a few activities.

We're thick into our Measurement unit, so we used beans, unifix cubes, crayons, & string to measure our feet and record our findings (after reading The Foot Book):

Then, we made some SERIOUSLY cute Horton elephants - (I modified a glyph from Glyph Girls) reading Horton Hears a Who & Horton Hatches the Egg:

On Thursday, we dressed as our favorite Dr. Seuss characters:

On Monday, we're celebrating NEA's Read Across America with an assembly.  I'll be attempting a Lorax costume (with a mustache & orange shirt)!

Dr. Seuss Dress-Up

I always have a Seuss dress up day...I live for dress down {jeans days} & dress up {costume} days.

So I wore my new Dr. Seuss t-shirt on Th. with jeans, my hat, & red bowtie.   Here are some of my cuties - I had a Grinch or two too, LOL (from our Dec. Green Grinch dress-up day):

Seuss is on the Loose!

So I love NEA's Read Across America - I love it so much that I teach all things Seuss for a whole week.  This year we'll celebrate it on Th. because Fri. is a PLC/Report Card Prep. Day without my Kinders.

Well, that was the plan - then the snow started at recess on Tu. afternoon!

Another 3 day work week (Mon. had a 2 hr. delay too, I didn't know because I planned for the whole day *with sub plans* for a ME DAY: dentist appt. & hair cut) - then today a delay turned into a SNOW CLOSURE!

So...3 days to teach President's Day last week & then 3 days to teach Seuss, {we might have to play catch-up for my One Fish, Two Fish glyphs...I can't miss my 2nd Glyph Girls purchase!}

And of course I used some Cat Stuff from Deanna & amazing centers from Growing Kinders.

Does anyone else get excited for a jeans day/week, besides on a Fri.?

We had a blast culminating the 1st semester with some Grinch AWESOME-NESS!  Of course we used Deanna Jump's unit, but the snow day prevented us from making our Grinch glyphs {next year Glyph Girls!}.

I don't know about yours, but our Green Grinch Party was FAB - so doing that again!!  We even had a dad dress up and pass out our green licked candy canes - the kids thought it was GREAT.

My Grinch hat was new & check out my green Chucks!!

Parent volunteers loved the snowman chocolate bars {with fuzzy socks tied on top as the hat}..."Thanks SNOW much for volunteering!"  Sorry, I don't have a pick {forgot to snap a shot} but they were loved & super fun - the best part, they're very reasonably priced too!  I'm pretty sure the idea came from a teacher blog/pinterest...I get so many ideas from both, but I couldn't find the post/link.

SNOW DAY! & A Few Rabbit Trails

Umm, so yesterday we had an elf making extravaganza {follow link to pics from last year} - basically this year it took all day after a 1hr. IEP meeting, 30 min. assembly, & 20 min. Saxon Phonics lesson.

Who's complaining...NOT ME!  It was fun, the idea is a combo of Cara Carrol's Elf Application freebie {I stuck to the 1st page with my Kinders, but my 1st graders last year did BOTH pages via writing groups all week} & Jennifer's Elf Patterns.  We cut, glued, and crafted - all while singing Christmas carols!! *RABBIT TRAIL #1* I had 2 parent volunteers in my room, helping our crafts along & not paying attention to the AMPLIFIED music in my room - via 4 ceiling mounted speakers.  I heard the kids singing the final chorus of "...where Jesus Christ is born."  Um, what?!?!  I teach in a public school, but I don't hide my faith - I'm pretty good this time of year, but I don't remember putting Religious Christmas music on my school iPod...then I remembered my Asst. Principal gave me a Kids Sing Along CD..."Go Tell it on the Mountain" was one of the songs on the disk!  I ran over to my Mac to stop the song & the moms just brushed it off saying, "Well, it's almost over now.  No harm done."  I smiled and said with a chuckle, "Look at all the participation, I guess they got Sunday School today too!"  Thank goodness they were so nice about it, could've been a real problem - guess I would have been covered, since {technically} my AP gave me the CD, right?!?!

Today I woke up excited to do Grinch Glyphs via the Glyph Girls - who I had to contact DIRECTLY to get the units.  *RABBIT TRAIL #2* What's with publishers?  The units are not REPLACING the books - they SUPPLEMENT them, in fact many teachers wouldn't use various titles if they weren't typed about via the teacher blog network {Pete the Cat, to name 1}.  Making said units entices teachers to read & purchase the books, not use the units without them...DUH!!!  Anyway, had to nab up as many of their cute Dr. Seuss units while they're still available!!

*RABBIT TRAIL #3* considering a One Fish, Two Fish OR Horton Hears a Who bulletin board for March's Dr. Seuss Day...too early to be planning this {pretty sure that's a YES!} but I want to keep up my door decorating winning streak!  LOL - consecutive victories would solidify my wall hoarding membership!!  So guess who bought 3 Seuss glyphs instead of 1?

Back to my wake up call - instead of hopping into the shower, I hear my phone & iPad - the GROAN of a 4am wake up call...proclaiming a SNOW DAY!?!?  I have to admit Snow Days are blessings, but I'm a little sad - I had fun crafty plans for my Kinders!  So, Grinch Glyphs are a NO GO - so sad because the are so STINKIN' CUTE...they will have to wait for Grinch Day 2013, alas!!

Since I was woken at 4am & couldn't get back to sleep, now I am off to shop for my family's presents...maybe catch a movie & enjoy the leisure of this wintry CO day/afternoon!

Hope you get some pics of Grinch Day 2012 tomorrow - I will really be sad if we don't get to have our Green Grinch Party on 12/20!

And the Winner is...

US - Room 13!  We won the school's door decorating contest.  And yes, I know the pic isn't a door (it's actually a window across the hall - but I needed more room)!  Yes, I'm in a 12 Step program - "Hello, I'm Kristan & I'm a wall hog!" 
Anyway, gotta love our enrichment teachers {planned all the Seuss-ational activities this week, including a raspberry/poppy seed cake with whipped icing delivered to the Teacher's Lounge - Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss...YUMMO!}.

Are You Celebrating Seuss?

So excited for Dr. Seuss' birthday & Read Across America on Friday, but one day isn't enough to celebrate this great children's author!  So I'm making it a Seuss-filled week, why not?

We are all geared up in 1st - here's my plan:
Monday - reading Cat in the Hat & sequencing the events, start Cat in the Hat glyph
Tuesday - reading Horton Hatches the Egg (my FAVORITE Dr. Seuss book, because I just love its message!) & creating mixed up animals (like an elephant bird)
Wednesday - reading Wacky Wednesday, how could you not?
Thursday - reading Fox in Socks my tongue is worried already! & Green Eggs & Ham...in preparation for:
Friday - we have A LOT on the docket...

1. Dress up as your favorite Seuss character (school-wide)
2. Cafeteria serving Green Eggs & Ham - we're creating a green egg graph of if we liked/didn't like it
3. Working with our 5th grade buddies to: 1. create & describe play-doh animals after reading If I Ran the Zoo & 2. creating oobleck after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck
4. Enjoying a Thing, red velvet cupcake (gotta love Pinterest)
5. DEAR time, because I could use a little sanity at this point in the day!

I also purchased Michelle Oakes' Dr. Seuss centers - finishing those up for stations next week
