Traditions Around the World

So YEAH - school is out for Christmas break!  Sorry to those who are still in the thick of it, I'm sure you'll not be returning on 1/3.  If you are apologies, my district's schedule is AWESOME - 2 week fall break, 2 week Christmas break, & 2 week spring break.

Now for the photos.  We've been globe trotting in 1st grade for the past 2 weeks & thanks to Michelle Oakes' free download, my kiddos have visited Sweden, Mexico, Israel, Kenya, and Germany.  Because this 'ain't my first rodeo' I supplemented many of the pages with things I have always done - but the packet Michelle posted kept it streamlined & focused.
Okay, so don't you ladies want this luggage - L.O.V.E.D. the pink accents!!

This sweetie's suitcase needed a super cute globe!

He posed for my pic, holding the handles!

Michelle's packet contained ideas for projects, but I always play spin the dreidel & pass out gelt for Hanukkah/Israel, make a kinara & label the candle flames for Kenya/Kwanzaa, celebrate St. Nicholas Day on 12/6 by making shoes & filling them with healthy treats (and candy coal - found at World Market) for Germany, make paper poinsettias for Mexico, & this year, a 1st for me, making St. Lucia crowns & star boy hats for Sweden.  Check out these cuties...
Star boys & St. Lucia crowned girls!
So, I created an anchor chart and read a book about each country's tradition.  As we added to our chart, the students got passports stamped, colored the flag, and completed the projects mentioned above.  Here is our completed chart -
Germany bulb, Israel star, Kwanzaa corn, Sweden hat/crown, & Mexico poinsettia
Happy Hanukkah, Happy St. Nicholas Day, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy St. Lucia Day, & Feliz Navidad; from all of us in Room 13!!
